Episode 31 : How the founder of Schizandu started saving lives with CHARCOAL

Dita Curgus, is the Founder of Schizandu Organics. She is on a mission to bring truly natural and exceptional products to people to help them cleanse, detoxify and nourish from the inside out and the outside in.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, to a home with no computers but all food “made from scratch” and put on the table from market-fresh or home-grown ingredients, she had participated in kitchen activities from very early on and started diving into books researching health-related topics at the age of 11.

Episode 29 : How forgetting to DIE transformed SUNLIFE Organics founder Khalil Rafati in to a business mogul

This is a true story. Khalil Rafati DIED, and then… he was rejected from the “dark side”. Given a second chance to face the world and CHANGE!

From cocaine addict to cacao expert! From heroin dependent to hempseed hero! From skid row habitant to living with SUNLIFE or better yet, the sunny side of life!

Yes, an abusive childhood and extreme lack of self-esteem brought Khalil on the fast track to spiraling down to a dead beat lifestyle. He died. But then, he forgot to completely disappear. Now he is BACK and has created a high vibrational company with a larger message attached to it: “BE HERE NOW”.

I have to admit something. I too feel at times as though I am struggling in this life. I know that I am completely and utterly very fortunate – but one cannot help feelings, am I right? Khalil’s objective is to go beyond the task of simply “making smoothies” – He wants to create a space of health and hope.

“It was tough, but by the grace of God I am alive and happy now. I am grateful to be where I am and would not be in the position I am in had I not gone through all that pain. Strange paradox, but my reality nonetheless. That’s why I chose the pink lotus as the symbol for SunLife Organics. From the mud and the darkness grows a beautiful flower. That’s why I chose the name SunLife. Life in the Sun. It’s not just a catchy name and logo, it’s who we are.”

A bit about Khalil’s journey through this interview:

“In 2003, I had reached the peak of suffering the high cost of low living. I was 33 years old, weighed 109 pounds and was living on the streets of Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles, addicted to heroin and cocaine. With nowhere to go but up, I decided to get sober. Although the future started looking brighter, I was still smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, eating junk food and drinking copious amounts of coffee and energy drinks. I always felt completely drained and devoid of energy. Depression was a constant.

I was soon introduced to juicing and superfoods by a friend of mine. The results were remarkable and instantaneous. I began to feel alive again— my anxiety quickly replaced by excitement and a renewed lust for life. I started getting more and more adventurous in my kitchen, trying to find a way to make all these amazing natural remedies more palatable, even crave-able, so they would be a part of my daily routine that I looked forward to.

So began my journey (some would say obsession) with finding and consuming the best products nature has to offer. I travelled extensively all over India, Indonesia and Central America, constantly asking questions, learning everything I could from gurus to surf bums, Ayurvedic doctors to street vendors. Here in the States, I explored what traditional Western medicine had to offer. I also went to longevity specialists, as well as a handful of so-called ‘healers’. In the end, I found that the truth was not much different than what most people’s grandmothers advised: ‘eat your fruits and veggies’. By eating a diet of organic whole foods— with the addition of some superfoods, regular exercise, a lot of love and compassion from friends and neighbors, and a daily practice of trying to do good deeds for others without getting caught— I found that I didn’t need a guru or ‘healer’ or Western medicine to recover.

In 2011, after joining forces with my business partner Hayley Gorcey, we opened the doors to the first SunLife Organics in Malibu, California with a simple mission: to love, heal and inspire. We wanted to share with our friends, neighbors and members of the community an opportunity to experience what I had— to provide access to true nourishment. We wanted a place where people could go for organic juices, organic smoothies, organic salads, organic everything really. But beyond that, we wanted a place where we could come together and re-connect as a community, away from our iPads, smartphones, and “social networks”; a place to elevate the human spirit and help us get back to basics. We wanted to hire kids from the local community and provide a fun, safe and sober environment for them to learn, grow and thrive.

Episode 28 : The POWER of SLEEP and your hormones with Katherine Brown

A short and sweet talk about how the POWER of SLEEP can directly influence the aging process, your hormones, and the rate at which you metabolize fat.

Did you know:

The results found that subjects who slept less than six hours a night over the course of this five years had a 32% gain in visceral fat, and this is compared to those who slept for more than six hours per night, and they had 13% increase on average.

This is more than twice as much visceral fat accumulation due to sleep deprivation. Alright?

Also, did you know that Aging + Sleep are directly correlated?

I’m talking telomeres? What are TELOMERES?! Telomeres are our greatest biological marker that inform us how long we’re going to live. And this is located- these are like the endcaps at the end of all of our chromosomes.

And as we age, like it gets clipped off more and more and more until our- basically our chromosomes unravel, you know? Our DNA unravels, which doesn’t sound good, but there was enzyme discovered that can add length back onto those telomeres and effectively in many senses stop- halt the aging process, if not reverse it in some senses, which is really, really crazy and just fascinating stuff.

But what we discovered is that sleep deprivation is quite possibly the biggest epigenetic trigger on your aging process. It’s quite possibly- sleep deprivation is quite possibly the biggest thing that will shorten your telomeres and age you faster, alright?

Sleep is the trigger that regulates your cortisol levels!

One of the very first things we see clinically when people are sleep deprived is elevated cortisol levels.

cortisol is actually a really important and valuable hormone. This is why we produce it, this is why it’s an option, but the problem arises when cortisol is produced in the wrong amount and at the wrong time.

Alright? For example, cortisol is needed in order for your thyroid hormone to work, right? And your thyroid is known as like the kind of governor of your entire metabolism in many ways. Alright?

It’s the master regulator of your metabolism, this thyroid gland. And thyroid hormone cannot be mobilized and utilized properly without cortisol being present. So there’s that, alright? Cortisol is not all bad.

Episode 19 : The REAL truths about CRYOTHERAPY from CEO Kevin Kramer

What exactly happens when you get half naked and stand in a Cryotherapy (FREEZING) chamber for up to 3 minutes? The CEO of US Cryotherapy explains the whole process of this essential recovery practice – and why you should be doing it!

Without giving too much away, this is the basic process of C R Y O. I was a little (OKAY, a LOT!) nervous when I first tried it… Now I have subjected myself to doing it every single day.

A Step by Step Introduction to US Cryotherapy

  1. De-robe to your skivvies and proceed to the full body chamber – get primary skin temperature checked.
  2. View/listen to instructions – This step is essential to get full benefits and safety.
  3. Enter monitored chamber and begin treatment. Dance if you want to, trust me on this!
  4. Exit chamber and check skin temperature to see how much you dropped (How low can you go!!! 45 Degrees for benefits!)
  5. Do 5 minutes of moderate cardio exercise to warm up and feel those endorphins starting to calibrate!
  6. Optional Treatments include: Hydromassage bed, Compression therapy, Facial Rejuvenation treatments and Local Cryotherapy (I always get this one!)

What to Expect

Cold air therapy in the whole body chamber is a dry fresh, oxygenated air — due to the lack of moisture (humidity), and is not painful like an ice bath or immersion. During the treatment, your skin temperature will decrease between 30-45 degrees over 2.5 to 3.5 minutes inside the chamber. All first time customers start at 2.5 minutes. At US Cryotherapy, we record every treatment in our database. We measure skin temperatures before and after treatments (in the core region of the body) which allows us to make recommendations for your future treatment exposure times. Individuals, based on BMI and vascularity, respond differently to cold and skin temps vary. You will immediately warm after exiting the chamber, with full range of motion in your muscles and joints, unlike water or ice treatments, where the joints remain stiff for hours. Even if you don’t like being cold, this process will rejuvenate your body, skin and mind, and you will leave feeling warmer than when you arrived.

During your experience you will listen to music to pass the time and an attendant will be monitoring your every movement through a large glass window or door at the technician station outside the chamber. The chamber doors are incapable of locking, so if you feel uncomfortable, you can easily exit the chamber at any time. If you are intimidated about going alone, no worries, our friendly staff is always available to go in with you, and most often at our centers, there’s a member always willing to introduce a first time visitor as a companion inside the chamber.

The EARTH is like a gigantic battery that contains a natural, subtle electric charge—a special kind of energy present in the ground. EVERYTHING in the world is connected to this “stable” electrical charger, haven’t you noticed this?

Episode 13 : Training + LIFE lessons with Olympic Medalist Caroline Burckle

What does it take to be an Olympic athlete? Secrets revealed! But, it’s not what you think…

Caroline Burckle, I’m still trying to catch my breath. Swimmer, “Lifer”, Leader!

Caroline won two NCAA individual championships in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle event in 2008, and was named the 2008 NCAA Female Swimmer of the Year by winning two NCAA national championships and breaking the oldest-standing women’s NCAA swimming record by swimming a 4:33.60 in the 500-yard freestyle! This was just one of her amazing highlights in college.

She soon framed her mindset on the bigger picture within her swimming career – the OLYMPICS!!!

At the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, Caroline placed fourth in the 200-meter freestyle, earning a place on the Olympic swim team for the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. She also placed fourth in the 400-meter freestyle and fifth in the 800-meter freestyle in Omaha per individual racing. WOW!!!

Off to the Beijing 2008 Olympics she would go and at the 2008 Olympic Games, Caroline earned a bronze medal swimming in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. Caroline swam the lead-off leg in the preliminary heats in 1:57.86 – THAT’s FAST!!! – and was selected to swim in the final. She swam the third leg of the final in 1:56.70 – THAT’s FASTER!!!

She filled her life with Swimming + Training. Now that she has retired from that competitive sport – swimming athletically + for pleasure these days – she is leading athletes of this generation with mindful practices on how they too can go for any goal they are striving for!

What does everyone want in life?
To be LOVED, to be VALIDATED, to be SEEN.

How does one accept these gifts without first LOVING, VALIDATING and SEEING themselves as they truly are.

Going inward and recognizing your values is the key to self-discovering these gifts. How do you begin?

STOP! You must completely – S T O P . It’s worth it. When you STOP you can ask yourself, “What’s my BEST intention?” What ever that may be will transform your spirit and translate in to your vibrations. It will create your heart to live in a zone of peace. It will cultivate passion and compassion to yourself and toward others. It will allow you to witness forgiveness and patience as well as making these traits a part of your daily life.

Meditation.

The self reflection of your / one’s spirit of the body… it shows YOU / one what your calling is and that calling is timeless.

MRI scans show that after an eight-week course of mindfulness practice, the brain’s “fight or flight” center, the amygdala, appears to shrink. This primal region of the brain, associated with fear and emotion, is involved in the initiation of the body’s response to stress.

So, how did my practice come about? How is it going now that I have hit day 40? I share all of the vital truths HERE on the Podcast.

***Tips for starting your own practice:***

* How to Meditate : Beginners style
1. Sit or lie comfortably. You may even want to invest in a meditation chair or cushion.
2. Close your eyes. …
3. Make no effort to control the breath; simply breathe naturally.
4. Focus your attention on the breath and on how the body moves with each inhalation and exhalation.

Remember, don’t base your success and happiness on other people’s opinions or expectations. Set goals for yourself — some big, some small — and decide for yourself whether or not you’re working to truly achieve them.

Through the practice of mediation and simply “stopping”, you have all that you need to succeed.

***Four Key TCM Principles***

2. You are completely connected to nature. Changes in nature are always reflected in your body. TCM factors in the particular season, geographical location, time of day, as well as your age, genetics, and the condition of your body when looking at your health issues.

3. You were born with a natural self-healing ability. Your body is a microcosm that reflects the macrocosm. Think about it: nature has a regenerative capacity, and so do you. Sometimes, this ability may appear to be lost or difficult to access. In most cases, it is never completely gone.

4. Prevention is the best cure. Do you know your body is continually revealing signs about the state of your health? Let’s face it, it’s common to ignore these signs or symptoms until something more complicated arises. TCM teaches you how to interpret what your body is telling you.

**Acupuncture**

Needles are used to relieve energy blockages at key acupoints along the meridians to help the Qi {energy} flow smoothly.

**Classical Herbal Therapy**

Herbal therapy has been a heavily relied practice to help heal the body-mind-spirit. Energy is a huge part of Chinese Medicine and much energy is found in the plant kingdom.

**Qigong**

The life force or energy that animates everything in the universe and your body is what makes up Qigong. A practice that uses movements and postures and can create many physical healing benefits. Qigong = Energy Work {free flows energy throughout the body’s meridian system}

ALSO – Each part of your body {organs} directly correlate with an emotion. I find this intriguing:

Liver is associated with Anger
Heart is associated with Joy
Spleen is associated with Worry
Lung is associated with Grief
Kidney is associated with Fear

Episode 7 : What BURNOUT does to you – really – JBH with Katherine Brown

I learned the hard way. Complete burnout is a REAL thing. You can feel like you are on top of the world one moment, simply floating through task after task, and then . . . “Uhhhhhhh, What was I doing?!” “What’s my purpose?!” “I need to nap…” – Side note: I’m not a “napper”.

I am a “DO ER!”, time after time I have self induced my veins with loads of caffeine and positive affirmations to fuel me throughout my days. I am athletic, I move my bod because I am like a hamster that needs constant movement as a means to brainstorm my next creative endeavor.

As I have grown older, I have become WISER – I have! I learned that I cannot fill others’ cup without fulling my own. I feel guilty in doing this. Do I really deserve a break? Do I really deserve to just SIT and shut off my mind? Do I really deserve to accept healing hands on my body?

And so, I learned that I deserve all of these tasks, and that YES, I can (and will) make time for them. It started as friends and family gifting me with such services – yoga, reiki / energy healing, massage / body work, spa sessions – and then… I turned 30. Did turning 30 mean that I could finally accept that “loving” myself was genuinely O-K? Wow. 30 years… and now I have come to the conclusion (with a little help from writing this goal down on my 2018 “resolutions” list) that I will, “DO ONE ‘SELF-CARE’ PRACTICE FOR ME – ONCE A MONTH MINIMUM.” – – – period.

Gulp. Yes, spend money on me. Yes, allow time for ME. And so the power of this practice has started to have a profound effect on the way I function, not to mention how I can relate to my clients as well! I’ve got to practice what I preach, so I am!

Think of self-care as tying your shoe laces. Yes, sure you have them on your feet, your toes are protected, but what happens when you start to jog or run?!

FLIPPITY-FLOP – – – BA-BOOOOOM! Down you go. You just “ate it” didn’t you?

Think of this as “burnout” or “overload”.

Unfortunately, failing to care for your own emotional and physical needs before attempting to resolve those of others can really take a toll on your emotional and physical well-being – You may find yourself starting to “stumble” and “trip” on those shoe laces!!!

So, why is a self-care practice so important?

It increases your sense of self-love, allowing you to appreciate and accept yourself for who you are. It promotes feelings of calm and relaxation, serving as a way to refocus and come back to your daily life refreshed and ready to take on anything. It improves both physical and mental health by reducing the effects of prolonged stress on your mind and body. When you meet your own needs, this makes you a more valuable and attractive partner, parent, friend, employee or caregiver. When you’re healthy and well-rested, you’re better equipped to support others – : )

Ways to feed your needs:

Physical self-care: Eating well, exercising regularly, making sleep a priority. Emotional self-care: Managing anxiety, anger, sadness, and other emotions. Setting boundaries with people who are not positive or supportive. Spending time alone to rest and recharge. Keeping up with a journal of gratitude or goals / passions.Spiritual self-care: Volunteering, connecting with nature, yoga, meditation, mindfulness. *** What’s my caring cocktail of choice you ask?! Here’s the scoop!

FITNESS – I like to get a good sweat on, pound the weight room OR stretch the bod.

HOT TEA! – Because this is a meditation in itself, did you read my post about this art?

YOGA – Okay, this is fitness to some, for me it’s all mental – BREATH WORK!!! Oh and breath is life!

ENERGY WORK / REIKI – Moving the energy fields and aligning chakras OR perhaps cutting some relationship chords is essential to tap in to your CORE BEING!

MASSAGE / BODY WORK – Detoxifying and cleansing to the organs AND mind.

MANI + PEDI – Because a fresh coat of paint always helps.

RETAIL + ART THERAPY – Because a new art piece (yes, fashion is art) always does a nice healing for the soul.

BATH-TIME – Essential + necessary! I prefer mine with bubbles OR Epsom salts and aromatherapy oils!
