The photos say it all.

I don’t get taken down often when talking about “thy beloved” Cold + Flu, but somedays I admit it, I wake up feeling a little sluggish and full in the head. So, what is that?! Well, it’s something. As superstitious as I am, I will NOT utter the words, NO NO NO. I am all in for natural remedies, so let’s get going on this wellness train, shall we?

I have created a couple of variations on my favorite remedies to have on hand and this is one that I would like to share with you all today.

*Sipping Broth*

(Plant-Based) // Serves: 6-8

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 large white or yellow onions, sliced into thin half-moons – I added a mix of shallots and garlic as well : )
  • 3 large fresh thyme sprigs – I approximate our 1 tsp full when the leaves are stripped – you can sub in 1/2 tsp dried.
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar – Raw Unfiltered / unpasteurized WITH ‘The Mother’
  • 4 cups vegetable stock (no salt added) OR – I made a homemade version of filtered water and sautéed medicinal herbs: thyme + rosemary + fennel + ginger + garlic.
  • 2 cups purified water – the integrity of your water source makes all of the difference with the finished product.
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3 tsp Himalayan sea salt, divided
  • ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • For garnish: Plant-based cheese – – – cashew, almond or pine nut based – OR omit completely.

DIRECTIONS

  1. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil over medium heat in a large soup pot.
  2. Add the onions, thyme and herb mixture + 1 tsp sea salt, and drizzle 1 tbsp olive oil over the onions – lower the heat to medium low. The onions will cook down to about ⅓ of their mass.
  3. Cook without a lid, stirring every so often, until the onions caramelize and turn light golden brown. This is a slower process if you really want that rich natural bronze – up to 50 minutes.
  4. Add the vinegar and cook until it’s absorbed and the onions are a deeper brown, approximately 15 minutes. – I LOVE this part, so much sizzle and steam!!!
  5. Add the stock or simply water, bay leaf, remaining salt and pepper, then bring to a boil. Turn the heat to low and simmer at least 30 minutes. * * * Note: Take out the bay leaf before serving.
  6. I usually eat it just like this, but you can also serve it with toasted gluten-free bread or a homemade socca / soft naan and melted cheese of choice.
  7. Make this in a LARGE batch so you can freeze most of it to have on tap when in a bind for something savory yet satifying to your immunities.

Besides having a SOUP sipper on hand, I like to keep some “lifesavers” around. These are perfect for instant concoctions when you or your loved ones are feeling a little under.

KB’s FAVE NATURAL ANTIBIOTICS:

  1. Raw Honey
    • Why? Naturally contains antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-fungal properties. True story, I used it on a second degree burn – BAM! Worked wonders and was a natural ointment to heal.
  2. Garlic
    • Why? Excellent for clearing sinuses! HoORrrAY!!! The high sulfur levels help kill unwanted bacterias.
  3. Echinacea
    • Why? Helps stimulate the immune system and dramatically improves cold and flu symptoms in no time flat! I love sipping on an Echinacea based tea all day long.
  4. Fermented Foods
    • Why? Rich in probiotics, these fighters help regulate the digestive tract to wash away any lingering toxins.
  5. Coconut Oil
    • Why? Has amazing anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties that starve off the “bad bugs”. Think of this as a cleanser for your whole system – ALSO, great for cleaning the crevices between your teeth. The less bacteria looming around the more proficient your over health is.
  6. Apple Cider Vinegar
    • Why? This magical liquid has been known to work wonders for many tasks in life – I personally love to use it as a natural probiotic (Be certain to get the ACV WITH ‘The Mother’) and a natural disinfectant. I love using this as much as possible in my life, from dressings to wellness tonics! – Right now I am sipping on warm ACV + Ginger Root… Yummmm!!!
  7. Grapefruit – extract!
    • Why? Holds a powerful combination of anti-fungal, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.  This extract can act as a natural preservative and disinfectant as well as a wonderful protector against pathogens.
